Follow the moving ball, then compare the movement with the coaching points below.

Coaching objective

Players use a short set pass to release a third player moving forward into the next line.

Setup

  • Create two mirrored passing channels approximately 18–25 yards long.
  • Place Player A at the start, Player B centrally, and Player C in a wider advanced position.
  • A passes into B, B sets the ball, and C runs onto the set pass before playing to the next group.

Rules and scoring

  • The set pass should be one touch whenever possible.
  • Player C begins the run as the ball travels from A to B.
  • Players rotate A to B, B to C, and C to the next starting line.

Coaching cues

  • A: pass firmly into the front foot.
  • B: check away, arrive late, and set at an angle.
  • C: move while the first pass travels.
  • Play the set pass into the runner’s path.
  • Communicate early: set, turn, or leave.

Detailed coaching points

  • The third-player run should not start so early that the runner is standing and waiting.
  • The set player must create an angle rather than standing directly in the passing line.
  • Demand realistic pass speed so the combination can break pressure.
  • Relate the movement to midfield support, a striker checking short, and a wide player running beyond.

Common errors and corrections

  • The third player running before the first pass is played.
  • A soft set pass that forces the runner to slow down.
  • The middle player standing flat and blocking the forward lane.
  • Players watching the pass instead of rotating immediately.

Progress the drill

  • Add a finish at the end of the combination.
  • Use a passive defender behind the set player.
  • Allow B to turn when the defender does not apply pressure.
  • Run the pattern from both sides with two balls.

Simplify the drill

  • Walk through the timing without defenders.
  • Allow B two touches to control and set.
  • Shorten the distances.
  • Use cones to mark the exact path of the third-player run.

What to measure

  • Third-player receives while moving forward.
  • Set passes played into the correct path.
  • Timing between the first pass and the forward run.
  • Successful combinations completed at game speed.
