Coaching objective
Players dribble at speed, use a decisive cut around a mannequin, and shoot before the goalkeeper can reset.
Setup
- Place a mannequin or tall cone 16–20 yards from goal.
- Players begin 8–12 yards behind it with a ball each or a ball supply.
- Create a second starting line on the opposite side to train both feet.
Rules and scoring
- Attack the mannequin at speed and make one clear move to either side.
- Shoot within two touches after passing the mannequin.
- Alternate sides or allow the coach to call the finishing direction.
Coaching cues
- Drive straight at the defender before changing direction.
- Use a sharp final touch into the shooting lane.
- Get the head up after the cut to locate the goalkeeper.
- Keep the ball outside the feet during the strike.
- Follow the shot for rebounds.
Detailed coaching points
- The change of direction should happen close enough to the mannequin to move a real defender.
- The final dribble touch must be long enough to create space but short enough to shoot under control.
- Coach different finishes: across goal, near post, lifted, or low through the goalkeeper’s stance.
- Avoid long lines by running the exercise on both sides simultaneously.
Common errors and corrections
- Moving sideways before engaging the defender.
- Taking too many touches after the cut.
- Looking only at the ball and missing the goalkeeper’s position.
- Plant foot too far from the ball.
Progress the drill
- Replace the mannequin with a live defender who begins passively.
- Add a recovering defender from behind.
- Require a weaker-foot finish.
- Award points for hitting designated corners.
Simplify the drill
- Start closer to goal.
- Use a wider obstacle.
- Allow three touches after the cut.
- Remove the goalkeeper and use corner targets.
What to measure
- Shots taken within two touches of the cut.
- Shots on target.
- Quality of the final dribble touch.
- Finishing success from both sides.
