Coaching objective
Five attackers keep the ball; when possession changes, both teams react immediately to counter-press or escape through a gate.
Setup
- Mark a 14-by-14 to 18-by-18-yard square with one small gate outside each end.
- Five attackers occupy the outside and central support positions against two defenders.
- The defenders attack either transition gate after winning the ball.
Rules and scoring
- The possession team scores one point for eight passes.
- After a regain, defenders have five seconds to pass or dribble through a transition gate.
- The possession team can win the ball back before the defenders escape.
Coaching cues
- Keep one player available behind the pressure and one beyond it.
- Move as the ball travels to create the next passing lane.
- On loss: nearest player presses, others close the gates.
- On regain: first touch away from pressure and head up for the exit.
- Communicate before the ball arrives.
Detailed coaching points
- The transition phase is as important as the possession phase; do not stop immediately after a turnover.
- The central support player should move off the defender’s shoulder rather than hiding behind them.
- Encourage the team that loses the ball to react together for three to five seconds.
- Defenders should recognize the safest gate instead of forcing the nearest one.
Common errors and corrections
- Possession players admiring the pass and becoming static.
- All five players reacting toward the ball after losing it and leaving a gate open.
- Defenders winning the ball but taking a negative first touch.
- Central player standing in the same line as an outside teammate.
Progress the drill
- Limit outside players to two touches and the central player to one.
- Award two points for escaping through the far gate.
- Add a third defender after ten passes.
- Require the possession team to play through the central player before scoring a pass point.
Simplify the drill
- Increase the area.
- Use one defender.
- Allow seven seconds to escape after the regain.
- Remove the central player and play 4v2 first.
What to measure
- Pass sequences completed.
- Time taken to react after losing possession.
- Successful escapes after a regain.
- Use of the central support player.
