Follow the moving ball, then compare the movement with the coaching points below.

Coaching objective

Four attackers circulate the ball to move the defenders, then play a controlled split pass when the central lane opens.

Setup

  • Mark a 10-by-10 to 14-by-14-yard square.
  • Place four attackers around the outside and two defenders inside.
  • Keep spare balls nearby for immediate restarts.

Rules and scoring

  • Attackers score one point for six passes and two points for a completed pass between the defenders.
  • A split pass counts only if the receiver controls it and the team keeps possession.
  • Rotate defenders after a win or after 45–60 seconds.

Coaching cues

  • Move the defenders before forcing the split.
  • Play around the outside until the central lane opens.
  • Receive side-on and see both adjacent teammates.
  • Use one touch when the defender is close and two when space is available.
  • After the split, support quickly so possession continues.

Detailed coaching points

  • A split pass is the result of patient circulation, not the only objective.
  • Players opposite the ball should adjust their position to stretch the two defenders apart.
  • Coach disguise: look wide and pass centrally, or shape centrally and play outside.
  • Defenders should work as a pair so attackers must earn the central lane.

Common errors and corrections

  • Trying the split on every possession.
  • Outside players standing on the cones without adjusting their angle.
  • Receiver failing to prepare before the split pass arrives.
  • Defenders chasing separately rather than screening together.

Progress the drill

  • Limit attackers to two touches.
  • A split pass must be followed by a one-touch pass.
  • Reduce the area.
  • Add two target gates outside the square for transition after the split.

Simplify the drill

  • Increase the area.
  • Use one active and one passive defender.
  • Count any pass through the central lane, even if not between both defenders.
  • Allow unlimited touches.

What to measure

  • Split passes completed without losing possession.
  • Passes used to move the defenders before the split.
  • Support speed after a penetrating pass.
  • Defensive compactness and communication.
