Coaching objective
Players receive on the correct foot, play a firm pass, and move immediately to support the next action.
Setup
- Place one player at each cone in a diamond.
- Add extra players behind the starting cone.
- The ball travels around the diamond and players follow their pass.
Rules and scoring
- Begin with two-touch play.
- Pass to the outside foot of the receiver.
- Reverse direction every two to three minutes.
Coaching cues
- Scan before the ball arrives.
- First touch away from pressure.
- Pass firmly and follow quickly.
Detailed coaching points
- The receiver should open the body before the ball arrives, not after the first touch.
- Pass to the outside foot so the next action can continue around the diamond.
- Demand immediate movement after the pass to keep every cone occupied.
Common errors and corrections
- Receiving square and stopping the ball underneath the body.
- Passes arriving behind the receiver.
- Players following the pass too slowly.
Progress the drill
- Add a second ball.
- Play one-touch when pass quality allows it.
- Add a wall-pass combination at one cone.
Simplify the drill
- Make the diamond smaller.
- Allow unlimited touches.
- Pause the pattern after each pass to correct body shape.
What to measure
- Pass-completion percentage.
- First-touch direction.
- Time between the pass and supporting movement.
