Dribbling drill

Gate Dribbling

A high-repetition activity that improves close control, scanning, turns, and acceleration.

Gate Dribbling field setup diagram

Coaching objective

Players dribble with control while scanning for space and changing direction under light traffic pressure.

Setup

  • Create six to ten cone gates throughout the area.
  • Every player starts with a ball.
  • Make the gates wide enough for early success.

Rules and scoring

  • Players score one point each time they dribble through a new gate.
  • They cannot use the same gate twice in a row.
  • Play for 45–75 seconds, then change the challenge.

Coaching cues

  • Small touches near pressure.
  • Eyes up between touches.
  • Accelerate after the turn.

Progress the drill

  • Use only the weaker foot.
  • Add a turn at every gate.
  • Place one or two passive defenders in the area.

Simplify the drill

  • Increase the width of each gate.
  • Reduce the number of players in each area.
  • Allow players to stop the ball before turning.

What to measure

  • Number of different gates completed.
  • Frequency of head-up scanning.
  • Control after changing direction.
