Coaching objective

Players combine around the edge of the penalty area and finish with controlled speed and timing.

Setup

  • Player A starts with the ball; B and C act as target players; the goalkeeper is set.
  • A passes to B and runs beyond. The ball is set through C for a finish.
  • Rotate A to B, B to C, and C to the starting line.

Rules and scoring

  • Start unopposed to establish timing.
  • Finish within two touches.
  • Use both sides of the goal.

Coaching cues

  • Pass to the correct foot.
  • Run after the ball travels.
  • Finish early when the goalkeeper is set.

Progress the drill

  • Add one recovering defender.
  • Allow B to turn or set based on a visual cue.
  • Use different finishing surfaces.

Simplify the drill

  • Reduce the combination to one set pass.
  • Remove the goalkeeper initially.
  • Allow three touches to finish.

What to measure

  • Shots on target.
  • Timing of the run beyond the ball.
  • Number of touches before the finish.
