Attacking drill

3v2 Transition to Goal

A realistic overload exercise for attacking quickly, fixing defenders, and making the final pass.

3v2 Transition to Goal field setup diagram

Coaching objective

Attackers recognize and use a numerical advantage before defenders recover.

Setup

  • Three attackers begin 25–35 yards from goal against two defenders.
  • The coach serves the ball to the central attacker.
  • The next group is ready immediately after the shot or turnover.

Rules and scoring

  • Attackers have eight to ten seconds to finish.
  • Defenders score by winning the ball and passing through a target gate.
  • Rotate roles every three to four repetitions.

Coaching cues

  • First touch forward.
  • Use width to stretch two defenders.
  • Pass when the defender commits.

Progress the drill

  • Add a recovering defender.
  • Start from a turnover instead of a coach pass.
  • Award a bonus for a first-time finish.

Simplify the drill

  • Move the starting line closer to goal.
  • Use passive defenders for the first repetitions.
  • Remove the time limit.

What to measure

  • Shots created within the time limit.
  • Width of supporting runs.
  • Timing of the final pass.
